The Jewel in the Crown of Neoclassicism

Any potential buyer would be well advised to ignore the other review, which denied me the pleasures of this two-volume set for too long. While intended for the connoisseur or scholar, it has plenty of eye candy for the aficionado of glossy picture books and shelter magazines. Pavlovsk is the jewel in the crown of neoclassicism. Roughly contemporaneous with Monticello, it reveals Jefferson as a semi-talented, rustic amateur. By contrast, the buildings and park of Pavlovsk were designed by Charles Cameron, perhaps the greatest architect of the period. Pavlovsk's owner, the Empress Maria Fyodorovna, combined unlimited resources with exquisite taste and real talent as an artisan. The results are admirably documented in this two-volume set. Outdoors, vistas to delight from every vantage point; inside, one ravishing interior after the other, all filled with furniture, art and objects of the finest quality and often great historical interest. Best of all, the set captures the unique spirit of Pavlovsk. Opulent enough for a royal residence, the palace was nevertheless built on a sufficiently modest scale that even the twenty-first century reader can imagine himself or herself living happily ever after in its rooms and green spaces. A must for the library of any serious student of the decorative arts and architecture of the eighteenth century.

This work analyzes the antecedencts to the Maccabean revolt and the initial phases of the rebellion against the background of contemporary Hellenistic and Roman history. The author contests the generally accepted view that the Jewish aristocracy during the Syrian wars was divided into well-defined pro-Seleucid and pro-Ptolemaeic factions. A major section of the book deals with Antiochus Epiphanes; the author shows that although the king initiated unprecedented religious persecutions, his interest in Judea was somewhat limited and an overall examination of the Seleucid's policies demonstrates his political abilities. A prosopographical study indicates how the death of Antiochus led to strife and eventually disintegration within the Seleucid kingdom, paving the way for Roman intervention and for the Jews' march on the road to independence.

The shop designs leave me confused

If you are looking to buy a book of contemporary Supermarket & Pastry Shop design of which you'd like to get ideas for your shop in the United States or Western Europe, then this book is not for you. The Shops in this book have too many colors and objects to distract you from the products the shop wants you to buy. The designer of the shops over saturates the eyes and leaves you confused. There is not enough use of white, and the lighting of the shops does not complement the design in any way. The illuminated lights in the shop have a reddish filter which is normally only used for displaying meats.

An anthropological study of the rainmakers of the Nilotic Sudan. An excellent chronicle

For those of you who were inspired by John Berkey's fantastic visions of the future decades ago, you will find continued inspiration in Jane Frank's new book, The Art of John Berkey. This book complements the earlier Painted Space book well, but stands on its own as a serious work about John Berkey. Several pages of autobiographical notes from Mr. Berkey himself followed by several chapters chronicling the many phases of Berkey's remarkable career. Back before computers, Berkey mastered the brush, inferring technological complexity with only minimal strokes in a way few other artists can. He ranks high along with legendary futurist artists like Syd Mead and Ralph McQuarrie. The book is beautifully printed, with lush colorful pages that bring Berkey's paintings to life. I recommend you purchase this book-it will take you on a fantastical journey you will want to come back to time and again.

Excellent artwork

I used to think of John Berkey as just a sci-fi artist. But after viewing this book its clear Berkey is quite simply an excellent artist on all levels. What I find masterful about his work is that upon close viewing you see that he uses simple brush strokes for his approach. Yet, when viewed from a distance his art appears as detailed as any photograph I've seen. This is what it means to be a true artist: Being able to convey a clearly conceived and well-executed idea while maintaining an original sense of style and technique. Mr Berkey's work should be viewed by all, whether sci-fi fan or not.

an amazing artist

I have both of John Berkey's books in my library (though my daughter seems to have acquired them). He was an outstanding artist who worked entirely with traditional materials. Syd Mead, no less, once stated that John Berkey and Michelangelo were his favorite artists (that's quite a complement). If you the reader should come upon this book and have any interest in art, space illustration or just creativity for it's own sake, I highly recommend this to you. Unfortunately, he's no longer with us, but his excellence lives on in his work, as shown within.

Herrera stood at the crossroads of two specifically early-modern traditions: the metaphorical esoteric system developed by Isaac Luria in the early - to mid sixteenth century, and early-modern philosophical syncretism, that is, the process of reconciliation of Dominican, Franciscan, and Augustinian theology with pagan, Jewish, and Islamic thought that culminated in the fifteenth century with Ficino and Pico and was carried on in the Counter Reformation humanism of Francisco Suárez, among others.

The fact that Herrera wrote this, his most influential work, and the few other works attributed to him in Spanish makes him unique in both the history of kabbalah and in the history of Spanish literature; it also accounts for the complex story of the transmission and reception of his ideas, which (except for the circulation of the Spanish manuscript in Jewish circles in the Netherlands) was accomplished not by the dissemination of the original Spanish text but through the Hebrew translation of Gate of Heaven that was made after his death by R. Isaac Aboab da Fonseca, who took it upon himself to abridge and alter Herrera's text considerably.

The present edition and translation, which is the first complete translation of Puerta del Cielo in any language, is another stage in the transmission of Herrera's ideas to a broader reading public. The hope is that the availability of this remarkable work in English will make Herrera's unique contribution to Spanish letters, kabbalah, and the history of European thought better known and understood.

A Must Have Book

I saw a copy of Domus while in Naples and knew I would have to order a copy when I returned home. The book is beautifully produced with an excellent essay by Donatella Mazzolini on the architecture of Roman houses, focusing on those under discussion in Pompeii, Herculaneum and Rome. This is followed by an essay by Umberto Pappalando on the Domus Romana, focusing on the development of houses and gardens. As good as these essays are it is the pages dealing with the houses themselves that is jaw-dropping. The houses are arranged in sections following the development of the Roman domus and include color pictures and diagrams of the houses. There are short introductions to the homes followed by a portfolio section consisting of close up pictures of the frescos printed on non-glossy textured paper that gives a better impression of how the painting appears to the observer. These reproductions are superb.

The choice of buildings is impressive. There are far too many to list but among them are: from Pompeii the House of the Faun, the House of Julius Polybius, the Villa of Mysteries, the House of the Golden Bracelet, the House of the Tragic Poet and the House of the Labyrinth; from Herculaneum: the Samnite House, the House of the Skeleton, the House of the Grand Portal, the Collegium of the Augustales; from Rome: the House of the Griffins, Livia's House on the Palatine and at Prima Porta and the Domus Aurea. The Villa of Poppea at Oplontis gets special attention in the book, and a fresco from the house appears on the cover.

This book is a must for anyone interested in ancient Roman houses and their decoration. If you have even visited Pompeii, Herculaneum and the other villas destroyed by Mount Vesuvius you will enjoy this book.

Fabulous in every respect

A wonderful work in all respects - scholarship, printing, presentation, photography. Some of the paintings are more like wall paper samples, the paper and printing is that good.

Another great work in the Getty catalog. A must have for any serious student of Roman Art/Architecture.

Beautiful but pricey

Many lovely color photos, but I was dismayed to note a surprising number of editorial oversights/mistakes in the text, very disappointing in a work this expensive from such a classy publisher. "Pompeii: the History, Life and Art of the Buried City," published by White Star, is equally beautiful but considerably less expensive and thus a better value.

Great book on carpet installation

I work for a property management firm. We just started doing out carpet in house. I searched for installation training as was unable to find any. I even went to many different flooring tool suppliers and I was still unable to come up with any references on the subject. This book is an invaluable training aid for new installers. A follow up video would be great.

Good data - Horrible editing

This is a good book on how to lay carpet. The carpet on my stairs was wearing out and I wanted to replace it myself from extra carpet I had from the original installation. Eric Larson's book gave me the information to do the job.

I read the rest of the book and, although I did not use the data, the information seemed complete and the instructions were generally clear. It's clear that Eric wrote the book for apprentice carpet installers and I applaud his textbook-like approach with the questions and answers after each chapter. Based on the information contained and the approach used to teach it, I would give the book four to four and a half stars.

My complaint is about the editing, which is attributed to Dr. William G. Burns of San Antonio. The English used in the book is atrocious. Sentences and clauses run together without any punctuation, sort of the way someone would speak in informal speech. Many of the sentences are just fragments, either without a verb or without a subject. Possessive forms do not use an apostrophe (Jacks hammer instead of Jack's hammer). It's clear that this book was written on a word processor and the spell check was used without any human judgment. There are many places in the book where the wrong word is used, but not misspelled. That is, "their" is used where it should be "there". "To" is used when it should be "too". "And" is used when it should be "an" ("three eights of and inch"). The book is riddled with errors of this nature. My favorite is where Eric writes that "...the installer should asses the job..." instead of "assess".

I realize that Eric is a carpet installer and not an English major, and I do not fault him for the poor English usage. I do fault him for not realizing his weakness and finding a better editor, even if that editor would drive him crazy with rewrites and markups. There's simply no excuse for putting out a book, especially one that is to be used as a textbook, with such poor English usage.

However, if you can get past the mangling of the language, the book does have some good information on carpet installation.

Never seen carpet installed but want to do it yourself anyway? Get this book.
By First time carpet layer
This book is thorough enough to teach you, on it's own, how to install stretch-in carpet in your home. I used it to learn what I needed to know to install stretch-in carpet in a basement bedroom with a concrete floor and on my bullnose staircase. Its the only comprehensive carpet installation reference I could find, but luckily, it was all I needed.

As others have noted, it is riddled with misspelling and covers lots of information a DIY carpet installer doesn't need-- like how to dress and how to handle customers. None of that bothered me since it did a fine job teaching me what I wanted to learn.

What happened to this edition???

The previous edition of this book is *far* superior to this edition. In this version it appears that all of the photos were digitally scanned (and some altered) with absolutely HORRIBLE results. Some are actually blurry!! All the photos are *extremely* darkened, the cover included. It's shown here on Amazon with the grass being 2 different shades of green due to the sunlight, but on the actual book the grass is only a single shade of dark green, with no sun lightening half of it. I thought I had a bad copy from Amazon so I checked out 3 different bookstores and found the same thing. This is really absurd that a publishing company could let these go out this way. Or do they not consider this a defect because it was intentionally "cheapened" this way? What a disgrace to a book that was truly a work of art. I suggest obtaining the previous out-of-print edition and leaving this one alone.

The digital age

I appreciate the warning about the photographs in this book. Why else would someone buy a book such as this other than to look at the beautiful homes in all of their splendor? I blame the digital age and bad scanning/reproducing/printing and I agree, some things are better off left alone and out of print.

Classic book of this genre

Good grief, these reviewers are harsh about this edition, I mean sure the former edition did have more vivid pics, but this book is not a disaster, it's still the wonderful book Ms. Randall wrote years ago. I have that edition, but I also enjoyed this edition, I really appreciated the updates and the additional homes. Ms. Randall cares about these homes and the history of the Gold Coast. This book is well researched and the photos are quite interesting. I realize that the criticism by the other amazon critics are not a criticism of this book, just the editor for the quality, but one star really gives people the wrong immpression of this classic book. Honestly the quality of this book is not that bad and the book itself is a classic of its genre. Give it a try or at least buy a pre owned older copy, you won't be disappointed.

Comprehensive, in a small package

I am sure it was difficult for the author to select what to share, and what to leave out, but this book gives a very nice overview of the museum. The layout of the book is convenient (according to history, and locations of various works). The book looks small, but it is heavy! So, it may not be one to pack in your bag for your trip to Paris, but it will do very nicely at acclimating you to the museum, and being a lovely reminder for later.

Muy Excellente!

This may not be the top-selling item at Amazon, but it's an excellent book, put out by Brill Publishing (Leiden), who make great scholarly books. There's a Gotisches Etym. Wörterbuch out there by somebody, but this is much easier to use and more helpful (plus it's in English, which is more convenient for most of us).

What really makes this nice is that, not only does it give Indogermanic cognates for the Gothic words, but it tells you which Greek words the Gothic ones are translations of (from Bishop Wulfila's Bible, who studied in Constantinople). Also, the book is sturdy and has a good feel to it.

Splendid on Mozarts alchemy but how is illumination as such?

Van den Berk is here the forerunner who cuts a path through the thick forest which would otherwise not be viable. Proving anew and definitely that the opera is an 'alchemical' one is what he does, which he is very sure about, and may be proud of. He does so by interpreting the diverse characters, symbols and processes, as well as the totality of them, as illustration of the 'magnum opus', the great work of the alchemists. And this within and from the lives and context not only from the makers of this opera, Mozart and his librettists, members of the 'illuminate' version of Freemasonry. But still more, and this is a really fascinating part of the study, from the history of mythology of which alchemy grew as one branch. So we learn among many other personalities and symbols from Pamina as salt, Tamino as sulphur, and Papageno-Papagena as mercury and hermaphrodite. And not less from the processes of transformation which all these undergo, resulting in the definitive 'chemical' wedding (the sacred marriage), through the phases of nigredo (blackening), albedo (whitening) and rubedo (reddening). Everything is shown in the most convincing details, from classical Greece and old Egypt to the Rosicrucian works of the 16th Century. From Isis and Osiris to Mozarts visit to Pompeji, and the history and meaning of the etchings which accompanied the publication of the opera. With detailed insights into Mozart's membership of Freemasonry, his personal views about what it stood for, and the way this influenced his musical and theatrical creations. With most insightful explanations of 92 very adequate illustrations. So to me indeed this is a monumental work.
I add hastily that the book is a pleasure to read, because Van den Berk is a master in letting the reader make the discoveries together with him. Although possibly not every part is to any reader of the same interest, it is clear that one enriches oneself very much by following the author throughout the whole book. Particularly if one is also interested in the evidence which proofs the theses of the author. Van den Berk has a strong intuition and at the same time a thorough feeling for scientific and historical proof, and always lets the later support the former.
And be sure the map he sketches does not contradict the innumerable hard facts for one moment! So I have to conclude that this work offers a lot to many people, not the least many suggestions for further studies in the field, and much inspiration for every reader, also those with a more personal interest in the various subjects, themes and topics related to Mozart's Zauberflöte.
I wish this book in the hands of many, and thank the makers of it for their inspiration and knowledge, particularly the author himself through which all this value comes through us.

Now I will continue with some questions which remain to me unsolved. To my opinion the richness of this book cannot be underestimated very much! Although the author is very well aware of many themes there are also aspects which he does not give very much attention. I mean the path of illumination itself.
To me the experience or realization of illumination is important as well as the path from and to it. I can refer to illumination in the works of Jacob Boehme which have well influenced the authors which according to Van den Berk also inspired Mozart, particularly the famous Oetinger of whom a book was found in Mozarts library with a very interesting part about music! And I can also refer to illumination in the Buddhist tradition. While I experience the book of Van den Berk as 'scientifically' impressive, why does not deal he with the core itself of his subjects - namely the path from and to illumination - that intensively? Of course it is very likely that he does this indirectly so why not also directly?
But let me first acknowledge some other characteristic of this book which has impressed me very much: the author everywhere adds to his conclusions the way he has found them, and this is very inspiring. It tells us we ourselves could also find what we seek, if using our means in the right way. So the book itself is a splendid illustration of going one way, be it only that of detailed 'scientific' mythological and historical research (including important aspects of human psychology).
I add another point, which for me touches the core. To me illumination in the Western tradition of alchemy has everything to do with the so called union of the opposites of which the union of the opposite sexes is the most important example, also called 'androgyny' which is an important topic from classical to modern times (see my book on "Androgyny in Christianity, particularly in the works of Jacob Boehme" 1986; extensive summary in English at [...]As this includes the relation of sexuality and spirituality - the role of the union of the sexes at all levels, even as symbol of spiritual illumination! - it would be important not to forego this tradition and its implications, particularly when the subject is central to it, and to the Zauberflöte it surely is. For example: how is the relation in the opera between sexuality at lower and at higher levels and how has it come through in the course of the reception of the opera?! This is again a core theme Van den Berk's book puts on the scene of our attention, and although he himself does not elaborate upon it very much, it is very important as well and will hopefully be seen by many readers. The relation of sexuality and spirituality is of great importance to the history of the West, not only through the churches, through theology and mysticism, and not only through alternative traditions like Gnosticism and alchemy in which it flourished abundantly, but also in the philosophical presuppositions of Western culture as such. It is not by chance that the theme of the Zauberflöte is a core theme. Whereas it is a great merit of this book of Van den Berk to have proved this with regard to the roots of the Zauberflöte in alchemy and Freemasonry, it would be a great accomplishment if the much broader implications of it - I repeat: a core theme of Western culture - from now on would be elaborated upon more fully. Again: that Van den Berk with his book touches upon such a fundamental theme to our Western culture and spirituality, and so makes possible a more thorough study of the latter, to me is a great advantage and a great merit. It makes even comparisons and discussions with other cultures more near and better possible. Not a small value.

The Magic Flute

This study comprises five major sections, each divided into several chapters. The first section is meant as an introduction into both the alchemical world, and the opera as alchemical opus. Section two is characterized by an historical perspective situating the foremost secret societies in Vienna towards the end of the eighteenth century: the orders of Rosicrucians and Freemasons. In the third section, van de Berk concentrates in depth on the mythological elements in the opera. These are of vital importance in understanding alchemical symbols. The fourth section is the central part, the umbilicus of this study, in which he describes the alchemical structure of Die Zauberflote. The fifth and final section of the book deals with the makers of Die Zauberflote and several classical problems surrounding the conception and birth of the libretto. The final two chapters are dedicated solely to Mozart himself.

To the reader who is not familiar with Die Zauberflote (concerning the story or the music) it is strongly advised to first listen to the work, or at least to get a good sense of the storyline before getting lost in the many references that run criss-cross throughout the opera. Aside from the alchemical reality being sometimes difficult for us to penetrate, Die Zauberflote itself is also a complex story. Appendix 1 provides an extensive summary of the libretto.

The libretto forms the heart of this study, not the score. So it is of great value that the book comes with 3 CD's offering for the first time an integral rendition of the opera. Finally, Appendix 3 contains the complete and unabridged text of the original libretto from 1791.

I have only listened to the Opera and grazed the first part of the book but am getting an insight that I would not have gotten otherwise. The need to go underground with the metaphysical movements seem to not be just Church related,Politics and Self serving members not true seekers were the reason for the need to hide messages to be preserved by the passages of time in an Opera. The layers of the message in The Magic Flute are multifold. I am sure I will see more each time I listen to the Opera and reread the book.

Life and Work: Malene Birger's Life in Pictures

From the moment I opened this book, I felt motivated to re-design my living space. Being that she is a renowned fashion designer, there's no surprise Birger certainly has an eye for presentation. I swear, each time I flip through these pages, I am full of ideas...

One of the first photographs which strikes me is one of a framed photo-booth style black and white picture of Kate Moss making with goofy, playful expressions. The photo appears to be placed on a white shelf. Placed to the right of this item is a clear mason jar encasing mini conch shells and a couple of wooden paint brushes.

The theme of raw art and creativity are presented in a manner which strikes, for some reason, a sense of purity. There are glimpses of art-in-the-making (paintings) as well as fully finished artwork- in the form of both paintings as well as clothing (there's a repetition of hats hanging on walls which looks so classic!)

I think the best part of this book is the last section entitled "work" which extracts the classy, black-and-white imagery which places the focus on Birger's crafty design work as opposed to a simple photograph. This part of the book definitely extracts a more personal theme. Some photos are of Birger in her studio, some of her models and audience at fashion shows. There's also some of her work displayed on racks. The entire book is sort of like a history of design and Birger's own creativity displayed through pictures.

Quality property porn - but at a correspondingly obscene price

It's a little odd to begin a book review by expressing total outrage at its price-tag, but this coffee table tome is possibly the most expensive non-rare, non-textbook, literary purchase I have ever, ever made - and honestly, I still feel slightly sickened by my self-indulgence in buying it.

Let's be clear here: even at HALF the recommended retail price, you'd be justified in accusing the publisher of usury. At its full £70.00 price (yes, dear reader, SEVENTY ENGLISH POUNDS, you have not misread), we should all be clamouring for a public prosecution, for never before have I seen a more blatant case of DAYLIGHT ROBBERY.

It took a full three weeks of wrestling with my conscience, and a few sneaky real life previews of the book at Waterstone's, before I caved and bought my own copy at Amazon's discounted (but very definitely still not bargain) price. So, given I'd already checked out the full contents of 'Malene Birger: Life and Work' in my favourite high street book showroom, why did I still go on to part with my hard-earned readies?

Because my name is ___, and I am hopelessly addicted to interiors magazines and design books, and this is - without question - the most unexpected and appealing property porn I have seen in YEARS.

For those of you unfamiliar with her work, Malene Birger is a Danish fashion designer. Her clothes have a very distinctive style which I can only describe as "Indian Princess in Scandinavia"; a very strange and beguiling mix of ethnic-luxe, Northern European austerity, and old-school magpie glamour. This book is a sort of pictorial biography, showcasing Birger's studio and several homes. As you'd expect at this hugely inflated RRP, it is beautifully photographed and lushly produced with big, fat, glossy pages. As is typical of the genre, the text is very meagre, and hagiographic twaddle when it appears. Ignore it, and just concentrate on the pictures.

And such pictures! I am in love, I am in lust, I am OBSESSED with everything Malene Birger owns. Like the clothes she designs, her interiors are rendered in a colour palette almost severe in its restraint, yet there's not a single minimal or uncomfortable thing about them. Nothing appears contrived or ostentatious, and yet every room attests to talent, success and confidently eclectic taste. Chanel handbags, Louis Vuitton trunks and the stiffly shiny carrier bags of expensive shops are arranged alongside sequinned Moroccan throws, Lucknowi embroidered cushions, silver and pewter gewgaws, Chinese flea-market tat and, er, Ikea Bekvam. It should all be a mish-mash, high-end-low-end, migraine-inducing design disaster, and instead it is supremely elegant and incredibly inviting, the very dream of serene good living.

'Malene Birger: Life and Work' has become my favourite bedtime reading. Its visuals soothe me and inspire me, and though it came at an exorbitant price, I have to admit it was not money wasted. If you love interiors or fashion and are longing for some fresh new creative stimulation, this book is certainly a "must-see"...and if you can forgive the aforementioned criminally-inclined publisher, it's perhaps even a "must-buy".

Fabulous Book

This book is worth every penny! It`s a great coffee table book and I`ve enjoyed looking at it again and again since I purchased it a month ago. Malene Birger`s photos need no explanation. The best thing about this book is that the style of the rooms doesn't have to reflect your own aesthetic for you to be able to appreciate them. I always come away with new resources and inspiring ideas for future projects and I hope you do too!

The best coffee table book ever !!!

Recently I have found myself drawn to graphics of all kinds. Being a huge fan of Tashen books and seeing this book on their website I decided to order it. Now at $200.00 this was quite a big purchase but this book is incredible. The color plates are beautiful and the information about the designs is very complete as well as interesting. This is a huge book! I think it must weigh in the neighborhood of 10 lbs. It is not a book to take to the beach for a little read. However, it is a book to get inspired by and it will inspire you no matter what your art medium is. This is a book that I will tresure for years to come and I am sure if you decide to invest in this book you will not be disapointed.

If you want to save some money. . .

Then check out Dover Publication's "Full-Color Picture Sourcebook of Historic Ornament: All 120 Plates from "L'Ornement Polychrome" and "Racinet's Historic Ornament in Full Color" since Taschen's book is basically just an oversized version of these modestly priced books. Of course, you'll have to scan and manipulate photos yourself since the Dover versions don't come in any digital format.

Heavy Duty

This book is heavy. Literally it must weigh 20lbs. It is also heavy with amazing content and incredible beauty and erudite commentary. The DVD is worth purchase price alone giving so much royalty free content. Look for tons of wrapping paper featuring these images to appear in stationary shops.

Saturated with Color and History

This book is full of glossy pictures of examples of rustic houses all over Spain - in Galicia, Pais Vasso, Castilla Y Leon, Catalunya, Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, Valencia, Isla Baleares and Andalucia. There is a nice sense of unity and continuity in the locales pictured. This is not so much a design how-to book as it is one for inspiration and ideas. There are a lot of big wooden beams, stones and stucco. There is such a body of literature about English and French Country homes; this is a nice contrast to those books. The country houses of Spain have a weightier feel. The natural light is brighter and harsher, so the colors are complementary to that bright sunlight. The landscaping is very Mediterranean as well. This book contins many good examples of old, rustic Spanish style.

Genius Work

The Color Keyboards of Le Corbusier are a work of genius by one of the masters of Modern architecture. This is a fantastic reprint of his 1931 and 1959 color chords that Le Corbusier created for the Swiss company Salubra. This is the second reprint and Ruegg was certain to get the colors as close as possible to the originals (the first reprint was a bit "off" in it's colors).

What makes this work so pertinent and important is this is an incredible tool for putting colors together that make our homes (offices, schools, shops, workplaces, etc) look absolutely fantastic. By using the color keyboards and the cutout viewers supplied by Le Corbusier you have a new world of colors opened up to you - colors combinations most people would never have thought of. Le Corbusier supples palletes of blues for Space, blues for the Sea, tans for the Beach or Desert, greens for the country, Browns for the Forest, two palletes for Masonry and several others. Wherever you plan to build there is a pallete of colors that will compliment your site. This gives you the main body of the house color and two secondary colors to choose from. Along with these primary and secondary colors you now have a wide choice of trim colors that come into selection using the cutout viewers. You may now choose one, two, or three trim colors (depending on the viewer you use and how large and complex you want your color "chord" to be.) Once you sit down with the color chords and begin playing with them it will soon become obvious just what a genius Le Corbusier was. His choice of color chords is incredible in its ability to make architectural features seem very human and personal and alive all at the same time. The inventor of the Modulator thought of architecture on very human terms.

Once you have picked your color chord you have full sheets of each color you've chosen (supplied in a second book) to take to your paint store for them to make exact duplications. Choose what architectural features you want painted what color and off you go. The results are absolutely incredible. This is the book that Eichler used to pick colors that made his neighborhoods "fit together" as an organic whole.

This book is well worth the price if you want to make your home stand out as unique, beautiful and fully human. You will see why originals of this book sell for $5,000.

Understanding Qutb

Updated from an earlier French edition, this book is an outstanding contribution to the dissemination of the work of the Egyptian writer and activist Sayyid Qutb. Qutb's interpretation of Islam has profoundly influenced a generation of Muslim activists, including Osama bin Laden and the Taliban. It is impossible to comprehend the ideological and religious convictions of todays Islamist's (Fundamentalists') without reading Qutb. Consequently, Carre's work is highly prescient and for the English reader a vital contribution to the study of the Islamist movement.

The book is basically an analysis of Qutb's voluminous commentary on the Quran, published in English under the title of 'In the Shade of the Quran'. Qutb's most infamous book, 'Milestones', is largely comprised of a series of extracts taken from his Quranic commentary and whilst 'Milestones' is regularly quoted by Western academics this is the first extended study in English of the weightier 'In the Shade...' Carre' begins most chapters with an analysis of a specific topic as it is presented by Qutb. Observations and commentary by Carre himself are kept to a minimum and this allows the reader to more fully appreciate the unique qualities of Qutb's interpretation of Islam. Toward the end of each chapter the author compares Qutb's writings to the work of the Reformist thinkers Mohammed Abduh and Rashid Rida. I found this particularly helpful especially given that good English translations of the works of Rida and Abduh are not always easy to find. Usefully, this brings to light the differences between the earlier Reformist tradition and Islamism. This book is probably aimed at the specialist reader. However, the pros are fluent and easy to read. There are also many sub-headings throughout that allow the reader to focus on a specific area of interest; consequently, the more general reader may also find this book useful. I would suggest that this is probably one of the best analyses of Sayyid Qutb's philosophy available in English and i highly recommend it to anyone who is even remotely curious as to what Islamism is all about.

A Liife In Decoration by Keith Irvine

I have been a decorator for 37 years..I have at least, 1000 books about decoration.....

This is the BEST, by far. When I took it to the Pacific Design Center for Mr. Irvine to autograph.......he saw all these little stickie things marking pages......notes,; stars, and underlining everywhere......I was afraid he would think I had defaced this book!!

Hardly......he looked up at me, and said......"Oh...You are getting so much OUT of it!!"

Indeed I am....I make sure I spend several hours a week....with my magnifying glass......on this book.

My husband gave me a copy of this book as a gift, and I simply could not put it down once it arrived. I have a huge collection of art and design books, and this certainly rates as one of the best, if not the best. This volume not only presents page afte page of wonderful rooms, but it gives the reader a lot of insight into what makes Mr. Irvine tick. I've long been a fan of his, and I think I have a copy of every magazine article that includes a Keith Irvine room. So for me, this book is a treasure. I love Mr. Irvine's honesty, his great design sense, and his apparent sense of fun. This is a tribute to a design giant, and I loved it from cover to cover. It's the kind of book I find myself returning to for another look. Five-stars for sure! Sheila Lotterhos, Florida

New Ancient Near East

This 3-book series is an extensive update of the classic Pritchard ANET (ancient near-eastern texts). Though some of the texts are shortened from Pritchard's volume, the new texts, number of texts, and more up to date translations and notes more than make this book worthwhile... if you can afford it :-) Otherwise, the 2 Pritchard paperbacks are quite reasonable.

It is Outstanding, it is on level with Prichards' ANE Texts -- though there is some repeatition of material. This Volume is an interesting read, diffentantly not an one nighter :-) A four day weekend should do it -- Though you will hate taking sleep breaks.

A TREASURE IN EVERY WAY

Oenophiles rejoice You'll be delighted and probably find everything you've ever dreamed of in this beautifully photographed volume. Granted, precious few of us can afford the incredible wine cellars featured, but thanks to THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WINE CELLARS IN THE WORLD we can visit. I hasten to add they're not only beautiful but their selections are impeccable.

Our visits, which include 60 wine cellars in Europe, North America, Lebanon and China, are arranged chronologically beginning with the older cellars and moving forward in history until we are amazed by a virtual wine cellar.

Opening with an Introduction that holds a description of the ideal cellar and focuses on temperature, humidity, lighting, vibration, etc. we are eager for our first stop which is Marques de Riscal, Elciego, Spain. Surrounded by gorgeous mountains and founded in 1858 it is the oldest cellar featured. Many may be surprised to see the eye-popping architecture designed by the one and only Frank Gehry Using the former Marques de Riscal cellar as the basis for his design he created a phenomenal structure over it. With a titanium exterior he incorporated the Marques de Riscal's colors - pink for the wine, gold for the mesh that covers the bottles, and silver for the bottleneck capsules. This complex includes a hotel, a restaurant, a business center and a health spa, which offers vinotherapy treatments.

A bit of heaven I'd be willing to stay for a long while but it is on to Thiessen Wijnkoopers, where the oldest parts of the subterranean cellars date to the 14th century and once formed part of the city's defenses. Next? France's Chateau Margaux where one of the best wines in the world is produced. And our travels have only begun.

Every one of the 240 pages is a feast for both mind and eye. There are 300 stunning color photographs, the majority of which are full page. Visions to dream on

Each of the cellars stands alone in its history, beauty, and originality. To have them all presented in this lush volume is a treasure.

photography art book on private wine cellars throughout history

Many of the nearly 60 wine cellars photographed are found in the renowned wine regions of Europe--France, Italy, and Germany. But there are also many of this appreciable number from regions which have not been known as wine-growing regions for centuries, but which nonetheless have come to be established as regions producing desirable wines for wine lovers around the world.

The book on wine cellars made up largely of photographs of them brings in both the old and the new. Among the newer areas are the United States and Canada, Lebanon, and China too. Belgium, the United Kingdom, and Monaco are among European areas brought in which have not been traditionally identified as areas associated with fine wines. And as wine cellars is the topic, the wines cellars of outstanding hotels expands the geographical area even more; though most of the hotels are in cities or regions with ties to the modern international wine trade. There are also photographs of wine cellars of private homes, one cellar containing more than 80,000 bottles in six cellars throughout the home. This variety of cellars brings a new perspective on the subject of wine to many readers. One sees that for some wine collectors and connoisseurs, wine can be like fine art.

The sequence of the wine cellars from older to newer roughly follows both the geographical spread of the development of new wine areas and interest in wine and also the development of wine cellars. Each cellar is introduced with a short essay on its origin, history, size, etc. It is the photographs especially though which highlight such developments in the field of wine and wine cellars. Catacomb-like ancient wine cellars have kegs of wine and wine bottles stacked one on top of the other in rows in recesses of tunnel-like or cavernous areas. Seen in some photographs is the dust accumulated on the old bottles. Later and modern-day wine cellars have better lighting, clearer organization, designer compartments and fixtures, wood and metal construction, and in some cases art work and furniture. Modern cellars are meant to be showcases as well as practical in that particular wines can readily be found for showing or use, not simply the storage areas for the keeping and maturation of wine of the early wine cellars. Despite the marked differences in styles over the centuries, the proper storage of wine involving temperature, ventilation, light, and other factors remains the same. Wine cellars old and modern allow for these essential considerations.

Brought into wine cellars they would never otherwise see, readers come into contact with the romance of wine from the artful photographs. The photographs also allow architects and interior designers to get ideas for cellars. Most broadly, the book makes an outstanding gift book for any wine lover.

Some Pleasantly Surprising Content

Looks can be deceiving as this beautifully crafted coffee table-esque book is not quite what you think it might be. Rather than focusing on the glitzy superstar cellars of the rich and famous, this semi-retrospective look at wine cellars centers much more on real, historical, chateau-based caves and other dug-out cellars as opposed to freshly built, state-of-the-art, temperature- and humidity-controlled wine rooms. I would, therefore, say that the book, although containing some absolutely stunning pictures, is as much a decent read about the history of wine cellars around the world and, accordingly, perhaps geared a bit more to true oenophiles than those looking for a more standard coffee table book. Bravo!

I can't bring myself to spend the money.....yet

I borrowed this book from the library to see if I was willing to spend the money on it. The answer is not quite yet. But nonetheless, it was absolutely gorgeous, and someday it will be in my collection. I'm keeping an eye out for a decent price on a used copy.

The pictures are simply beautiful, and beautifully simple. There were pictures of libraries that I could imagine myself holing up in for days, looking at books, and other libraries that I can imagine just standing in, looking around in awe, unable to read a word.

A picture is worth a thousand words! This book says so much and yet there are only a handful of words on each page identifying the library in the photo. As I was "reading" through this book, I realized that I have been in many of the cities or countries where these libraries are located. I missed some beautiful sites. For anyone who has an interest in libraries, this is a must "read." I will be giving this to my son, who is an architect. His specialty is libraries.

Luis Gonzalez Palma is a true artist with a beautiful sense of the people of his country. His work captures the heartbreak and passion that is Guatemalan indio culture and brings it into reality by using fantastical images and old time sepia toned style. One of the most amazing photo books I've ever seen.

Utterly compelling

I first saw this book on an artist friend's coffee table in Santa Fe.
I know they say don't judge a book by its cover, but that's exactly what compelled me to pick it up & upon opening it, gasp at the wonder of being introduced to the work of this incredible photographer - though to say he is simply a photographer does not begin to do justice!
I'll admit I'm the first to spend all the grocery money on books, but this book, though dear, is printed to the highest standard of quality & not sparse in any way, so to me, well worth saving for & splurging on.

Very Good, but....

What IS there, IS good- But, For the price, @ $45. to $55. I had hoped it was going to be much more in depth. More information on equipment; e.g.: Lenses, cameras, & accessories such as tripods, light meters, etc. I also would have liked much more information on films, printing paper, chemicals, processing techniques, etc. I suppose this does get away from the general title of the book somewhat, however, being new to the processing Large Format film, I needed much more information on that topic, as it is quite a bit different than working with roll film.
What I did like about it is that it did give a very good overview of the View Camera; and has especially good section on the techniques for using one. Not sorry I bought it, just wished for it to be a bit more than it turned out to be.

Total waste of money

At $78.73 this is the worst waste of money ever! Most of the information is basic how a camera works with very little on Large Format Photography. If you are starting to use a large format camera you will find, most of the information in this book you most likely already know. The pictures in this book look as if they were copied using an old copier from the 70s very dark and pixilated and hard to view. A book on photography, I would think, should have better images. This book looks as if someone printed it up in their basement. A much better buy would be "The Camera" by Ansel Adams. You can buy it used for $10 to $20; it has more information with better details on using large format with lot better images showing you how to use it. I was looking forward to it arriving. It came last night and I got the RMA 12 hours later; this is the first book I've ever returned! If I could I would give this book 0 stars.

Massively overpriced!

This book presents very basic info on very poorly printed paper. The print quality is VERY BAD! Another reviewer compared it to poor quality photocopies. They are right!

Not only should the author be embarrassed, but so should the publisher.

Save your money and search on-line for `View Camera techniques'. This book would be overpriced at ten dollars...

Outstanding!

One of the finest works written on Architectural Theory ever.
This masterful text by the late Christian Norberg-Schulz is used as compuslory literature around the world, especially in the architectural curricula in United States. It should get another printing definately.

Have to agree

I read this in graduate school 25 year ago. It is one of the few books from that period that I want to reread from start to finish. Seems more important now even than it did then. Absolutely is ready for a re-print. Hold on to your copy if you have one!

The truth is startling

This series of portraits is very plain in many ways, but contains some striking images. The cover photo is an example - it took me a moment to realize that the model had just come back from wading.

Other pictures have that same double-take effect, including a mother and child series of nudes. Each is a full-length, frontal (almost confrontational) view of the woman holding her new baby, just a few hours old. Baby cuteness takes some time to develop, more time than these children have had in the world. The mothers haven't had time to recover, either, still stretched but no longer filled. They hardly match either conventional beauty or the romanticized vision of motherhood. That line of blood down the inside of one woman's leg isn't very romantic at all. It's just very true. This series of photos, more than any other I can think of, keeps me coming back to look again, and to see the pictures a little differently each time.

Many of the photos in this collection did very little for me. That's probably a good thing. If the whole set had the density if its most demanding images, it would have created its own gravitational field.

If you can't see the large photos displayed at an exhibition get this book

This afternoon I saw an exhibition of 30-40 of Rineke Dijkstra's portraits at the Stedlijk museum in Amsterdam, and I was very affected by it. The photos seem so simple and innocuous at first glance, but it only takes a second to find what Barthes called a "punctum" (a subjectively conspicuous detail that takes you out of the frame into some, mostly likely ineffable and personal, truth of life, and establishes a direct connection between you and the subject in the photograph) in each one. Most often it is found in the subtlest of details in Dijkstra's photos, or between the photos as montage effect surfaces while moving through one of her series. Innocence and gritty reality seem to engage in a dialectic relationship throughout these works.
"Rineke Dijkstra: Portraits" contains an excellent sampling of Dijkstra work. If only it was 2, 3, or 4 times the size! but then, I suppose, it would be much to expensive for a student like me. In actual fact, the photos in this book are certainly large enough to be appreciated.

This book is a must have to reference a comprehensive collection of Rineke Dijkstra's work. The plates are 9"x12" with excellent color reproductions and the write-ups go beyond the regurgitated art critic articles.

Empowering

This book was one of the greatest gifts I have ever gotten myself. When I finished reading and looking at the beautiful photographs, I hugged the book to my chest.
This book not only told me thru writings but also showed me that I wasn't alone. This book meant the world to me as a bigendered female. I had only read about others transgender people, but had never seen anyone besides myself.
Thank you Mr.Cameron. :)
I recomend this book to anyone dealing with transgender issues- whether they be trans themself, a realtive or friend of a trans person, or just plain curious.

Dreams can Come True

I purchased this book as a gift for a f2M friend of mine who drew a LOT of hope from it. Loren's camera and words have a strong impact. Understanding one's self, our true nature, is vital. Body Alchemy is a valuable lesson in that.

wonderful book, fantastic images

This is simply a wonderful book. Filled with old photographs depicting human oddities and early medical procedures, it presents a unique glimpse into a time not too long past. The photo from which the title is taken is a work of art unto itself, as are most of the images in this tome. I never tire of paging through this collection, seeming to find something new every time. While some images may be disturbing, the uniqueness of each and every photo makes this book a must have for devotees of human oddities, as well as aficionados of early photography.

An uncommon window into the medically abnormal

This book of stunning, yet disturbing, photographs of medical anomalies spanning 100 years from the mid-19th c., may not be for everyone. It is a comprehensive visual essay into things that we find fascinating, yet repulsive. Unlike a carnival sideshow, however, the purpose of this wonderful book is not to cynically trivialize the individuals illustrated. Like the Mütter Museum, (Mütter Museum: Philadelphia College of Physicians, 19 South 22nd Street, between Chestnut and Market Hours: Mon-Sat 10am-4pm, Sun 12-4pm), Stanley Burns' book is a window into the 19th century propensity to gather esoteric information of all types, organize it and, ultimately, to exhibit it as the means to greater knowledge.

A compendium of extraoridinary photographs!

This is by far one of the best books out there depicting photographs of human anomalies, surgical procedures and things of the like during the early 20th century. If each picture is worth a thousand words, then this book could be an encyclopedia. A must buy for every person interested in human abnormalities. Not for the easily squeemish!
