Keith Irvine: A Life in Decoration Description
Interior decorator Keith Irvine steamed into New York Harbor in 1957 and immediately embarked on designing the unique, inspired interiors that have ensured him a place at the pinnacle of his field. His designs are characterized by feeling—wit, grandeur, comfort, drama—as well as by exquisite use of color, pattern, lighting, furniture, and accessories. Born in Scotland and trained in his profession in London—notably by the decorating legend John Fowler—Irving combines old-world wisdom and new-world enthusiasm in his mostly traditional rooms and houses. The first book on his work, Keith Irvine: A Life in Decoration—written by Irvine and his wife, noted design writer Chippy Irvine—is at once illustrated autobiography, collection of work, and elucidation of design philosophy.Irvin is known worldwide as an originator of the English country house look—a look not inherited, the decorator points out, but invented in the twentieth century. His characteristic played-down grandeur includes signature touches such as authoritative use of antiques of all eras, exquisite painted effects, rare scenic wallpaper, faded old carpets (his favorites are those that "look as though they might be in their last week"), spirited English and French chintzes, and loads of busts and books ("one can never have too many!").
Included in the book are more than twenty-five projects—including homes for Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Katherine Graham, Rex and Mercia Harrison, and Joan Kennedy—illustrated with exceptional color photographs drawn from Irvine's own archive. Irvine also presents his most personal projects—those designed for his own family.

A Liife In Decoration by Keith Irvine

I have been a decorator for 37 years..I have at least, 1000 books about decoration.....
This is the BEST, by far. When I took it to the Pacific Design Center for Mr. Irvine to autograph.......he saw all these little stickie things marking pages......notes,; stars, and underlining everywhere......I was afraid he would think I had defaced this book!!
Hardly......he looked up at me, and said......"Oh...You are getting so much OUT of it!!"
Indeed I am....I make sure I spend several hours a week....with my magnifying glass......on this book.

Keith Irvine: A Life in Decoration

My husband gave me a copy of this book as a gift, and I simply could not put it down once it arrived. I have a huge collection of art and design books, and this certainly rates as one of the best, if not the best. This volume not only presents page afte page of wonderful rooms, but it gives the reader a lot of insight into what makes Mr. Irvine tick. I've long been a fan of his, and I think I have a copy of every magazine article that includes a Keith Irvine room. So for me, this book is a treasure. I love Mr. Irvine's honesty, his great design sense, and his apparent sense of fun. This is a tribute to a design giant, and I loved it from cover to cover. It's the kind of book I find myself returning to for another look. Five-stars for sure! Sheila Lotterhos, Florida

Can look at it 100s of times!!!!

I was shocked to see so few stars attached to this entry. It's a marvelous decorating book with timeless ideas and great stories.
